We support Ukrainian refugees in Denmark by creating safe spaces and fostering connections with local communities. Through integration hubs, we empower young people to rebuild their lives and thrive.

Project Pillars

Our mission through the “Empowering Ukrainian Youth” programme, developed by Crossing Borders, is to transform the journey of Ukrainian youth from refugees to thriving members of the Danish society.

We achieve this by:

01

Creating safe spaces where inclusion thrives.

02

Fostering enduring connections with local communities.

03

Integrating youths into schools, clubs, and associations to build lasting ties.

Introducing Hubs

In December 2024, we launched Ukrainian Youth Hubs in Aalborg, Aarhus, Odense, and Copenhagen. These hubs serve as vibrant, inclusive meeting places for young people from diverse backgrounds. The idea for the hubs originated during a Crossing Borders workshop in 2023, where Ukrainian youth from across Denmark expressed a strong desire for warm, welcoming spaces that celebrate cultural diversity and foster connection.

Each hub provides a safe space for Ukrainian youth to reflect, grow, and connect. They foster personal and professional development through life skills and project management training, while also sharing essential resources about Denmark’s job market, education pathways, and cultural navigation. The hubs encourage community building by hosting events and creating opportunities for collaboration, strengthening networks and building bridges across communities.

Background

Since the outbreak of war in 2022, Denmark has welcomed around 41,000 Ukrainian refugees, offering safety and support in a time of crisis. Approximately 10,000 of these are young people attempting to navigate the significant challenge of uncertainty about their future. However, despite the struggles they face, this remarkably resourceful group of youths are working hard to build new lives for themselves in Denmark.

A reported narrative of the situation for Ukrainian youths, reported by both youth-centred organisations and members of the demographic themselves, is that they are a lost generation. Due to rules prohibiting them from leaving Ukraine, the target group of this initiative did not expect to find themselves seeking refuge in Denmark, subsequently facing limited opportunities, fragile networks and a lack of knowledge about Danish society. In addition, assistance provided to Ukrainian refugees has predominantly focused on children, women and the elderly, thus increasing sentiments of isolation and aimlessness among youth.

Partnerships

Our work is powered by partnerships.

We are proud to collaborate with these incredible organizations, whose support and shared vision drive our mission to empower Ukrainian youth!
